Corporate sponsorship: donations to non-profit organizations
A company can make donations to non-profit organisations. This is known as corporate sponsorship. These donations are eligible for tax relief. To benefit from this tax advantage, certain conditions must be met. Corporate philanthropy is material or financial support provided by a company, without any consideration, to a non-profit organisation for the pursuit of activities of general interest. In other words, sponsorship involves making a donation to a public-interest organisation (e.g. an association) to carry out its activities, without expecting any equivalent consideration in return.
The donation can take one of three forms:
-
In cash: the company makes a one-off or repeated cash donation
-
In kind: the company donates movable property (e.g. food, computers) or real estate (e.g. premises)
-
In skills: the company provides a service or makes its staff available to the charity.
To calculate the tax reduction, the donating company must value its donations in kind or in skills. Donated goods and services are valued at cost, i.e. the costs incurred by the company to acquire or produce the donated good or service.
